Have You Ever Wondered How Your Pointer Can “Hold It” For So Long?

If you own a Pointer, you probably already realize that some of these dogs can be a bit difficult to housetrain. It’s not that they don’t want to please you, because they most certainly do. If you housetrained your dog as a puppy, it probably just took a little longer than expected because of his short attention span and the way Pointers can get distracted by birds and so forth. At any rate, you finally got through it, just like I did. The funny thing is, now that my dog is fully housetrained, I’m wondering how he can “hold it” for so long!

For example, I got up this morning, went to the bathroom right away (had to!) and then took my Pointer outside for his first bathroom break of the day. No matter where we walked, that dog just wouldn’t “go”. I mean, it had been more than 8 hours since we went outside last night, didn’t this dog need to do something???? We walked for about 15 minutes, until I finally gave up and brought him back into the house. Sheesh.

Then I started getting worried. Were his kidneys working okay? Did he have some sort of infection? Was he dehydrated? I phoned the vet to ask what I should do. You know what the vet suggested?

Take him outside again. He’s fine – he probably just got distracted by some birds. Well, I did, and he was. Fine, that is. And he did eventually “produce”. Sometimes I wish I could “hold it” that long. But I guess I can’t complain about his housetraining taking more time than I thought it would, because it was certainly effective.
