Dogs Have Friends Too

We all have our friends, and they’re an important part of our lives. But one thing you might not realize is that your Pointer probably has friends too.

I’m not talking about human friends. Nope, if your Pointer has regular play buddies at the dog park, if people visiting your home often bring their dogs with them, or if you and your Pointer take daily walks with another person and their dog, he probably has some canine friends. But one of the classic examples of doggy friendship occurs when you have more than one dog.

Dogs that live together usually become the best of friends, even though it might take them a while to sort out their relationship at the beginning. Up until a few months ago, I was one of those people who owned two dogs – my Pointer and a lovely little Whippet mix.
Well, my dogs were inseparable. They slept together, played together and even ate together. It stayed that way until the day my Whippet passed away.

My own grief was bad enough, but watching my poor Pointer made things even worse. Seeing her pacing from room to room, crying, whining, searching for her friend was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I knew they were good buddies, but I never realized my Pointer felt such a strong emotional attachment.

She mourned for her buddy for weeks on end. It seemed like it was going to go on forever. After a while I talked with my vet, who had a good suggestion. Her advice was “get another dog”.

That’s exactly what I did, just a few weeks ago. To make a long story short, both dogs now have a new best friend.
