Protect Your Pointer on Cold Winter Days and Nights

There’s no doubt about it, my Pointer is a hunting dog. That’s why I got him, and he does a great job. We go out almost every weekend during hunting season, and he’s in great condition from running through the brush and woods after birds. He’s big, tough and strong. But I still have to be careful with him during the cold days we have during winter.

I’ve built a big pen for my dog outside, and that’s where he stays most of the time. It’s fenced in and he has a nice big area to run. I also built him a nice sturdy dog house. In the summer I put down clean straw on the floor for him to sleep on, but in the winter I also toss in a couple of old blankets for him to snuggle into when it’s cold. You have to be a little careful with Pointers in the winter, because their coat is short and on the thin side. It just doesn’t give them a whole lot of protection against a cold wind or ice and snow. I bring my dog into the house when it gets really cold, because even his dog house and blankets won’t keep him warm enough on bitter cold nights.

You’ve all probably heard the alerts on the TV weather shows – the ones where they tell you to bring your outdoor pets inside for the night because it’s going to be so cold. Your Pointer might be big and strong, but if he spends most of his time outside, bring him when the weather is cold or blustery in the winter.
