The Five Things Every Pointer Needs
I’ve been around dogs – including Pointers – for so many years now I feel like I’ve seen just about everything. That’s what happens when you’ve owned and shown dogs for as long as I have.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen a lot of dogs get sick over the years. I guess a certain amount of that is inevitable, but sometimes it could have been prevented. Take my friend whose dog almost died because of heartworms as a good example. He didn’t think giving his dog a heartworm preventive was necessary.
Well, as I said, his dog almost died. And the whole sorry experience would have been so easy (and cheap) to prevent. Monthly heartworm preventives are effective and dogs love them – they think they’re just a delicious treat.
In addition to a monthly heartworm preventive, every Pointer needs:
- An annual exam by a vet, including a fecal exam
- A rabies injection (either one-year or three-year, as appropriate)
- A DHLPP injection (either one-year or three-year, as appropriate) which protects your Pointer against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza
- An annual or biannual bordatella (kennel cough) vaccine
- and Plenty of love, affection and exercise
Giving your Pointer all five of these things can help him live to a ripe old age.
