The Daily Bum-Scratching Ritual

One reason we feel such affection for our Pointers is because they always keep us laughing. You might not realize it, but these dogs are talented canine comedians!

Think about it: you probably haven’t seen anything much funnier than a big, strong, tough-looking Pointer that’s intent on contorting his body any way he can, just so he can convince you to give him his daily bum-scratching. Well, watching that big strong dog melt into a liquid pool of butter once you start scratching might be even funnier!

Actually, there’s a very good reason why dogs love it so much when you scratch the area just above their tail. This is one of the few parts of his body a dog is physically unable to scratch. His legs just don’t bend that way, so he can’t reach a foot up to scratch his bum. Imagine what a relief it would be if some kind soul consented to scratch an itchy part of your body that you weren’t ever able to scratch yourself. Well, that kind of relief is probably what your Pointer feels while you’re scratching his bum, and that’s why the daily bum-scratching ritual has become a way of life around our house. It keeps us laughing and the look on his face while we’re scratching is priceless. We can almost hear him sigh with relief.
