My Pointer Adopted Me (Instead of the Other Way Around)

My husband and I got married a few years ago, and after we settled in together, we started talking about getting a dog or puppy. It was my idea, really – he was somewhat against it. I’d had a number of dogs before and had been wanting another one for a while. I worked on him for months before I finally got him to agree.

Of course, that meant we needed to decide whether to get a purebred pup from a breeder or a dog or pup from an animal shelter. At first we were leaning toward getting a purebred. After all, that way we’d have a pretty good idea of its general temperament as well as its adult size, weight and appearance. But the more we talked it through, the more we wanted to adopt a shelter dog, because that way we’d probably be saving a life. So we started looking for the right “pound puppy.”

We were looking for a dog that would be friendly, responsive to people and easy to groom. We must have gone to the shelter half a dozen times. Then we found her, or should I say, she found us. She was a forlorn-looking baby Pointer, only three months old. She never stopped looking at us while we walked up and down the aisle of cages.

We didn’t see any other dogs that interested us, but there was something about that Pointer puppy that kept bringing me back to her. The way her eyes followed us made me realize this dog was going to be capable of incredible focus and loyalty. And she was a Pointer, so we knew she’d be easy to groom.

To make a long story short, her eyes said she wanted to adopt us, so we made it happen. As it turns out, we got a purebred after all – we just did it through the pound instead of a breeder. And, it was one of the best decisions we’ve made since we got married. Our Pointer is everything we could have hoped for.
