Pointers and Small Dogs Get Along Just Fine

You already know that Pointers are fairly sizeable dogs, and that they’re athletic, strong and active. What you might not know is just how well they get along with small dogs. And I’m not just talking about dogs that weigh 20 or 30 pounds. Nope, I mean Pointers get along just fine with even the tiniest dogs.

I’ve had my Pointer for several years now, and he’s one of the joys of my life. We’re great buddies and we do so many things together. But one day my daughter decided she wanted a dog of her own. She’d seen those celebrities on TV carrying their tiny little dogs around town in satchels, purses and so forth. And she wanted one all for her own.

She’s old enough to have her own dog and care for it properly, but I hesitated when she asked about the possibility. I just wasn’t sure how my Pointer and such a small dog would interact. In the back of my mind, I was a little concerned my Pointer might somehow hurt a tiny little dog.

Well, my daughter pestered me so much I finally gave in. She’s had her little Chihuahua for a few months now. We got him from a rescue group and he’s all grown up. Soaking wet he probably weighs six pounds. And guess what? There hasn’t been a single incident between my Pointer and that little dog. In fact, they’ve become best friends. My Pointer watches over and “protects” little Chi Chi. They even sleep together, all cuddled up.

Go figure. I never thought my Pointer would get along so well with such a tiny little dog. I guess Pointers really must be as easygoing and gentle as their reputation.
