Quick Tips to Help Your Pointer Stay Healthy

Despite wanting the best for your dog, you’ll probably run into at least a few health issues. Most will probably be minor, but there’s always the chance of a more serious condition. Fortunately, many potential Pointer health issues can be prevented with some regular care and attention.

Start by having your vet examine your Pointer thoroughly at least once a year. In addition to checking his heart, lungs, skin, teeth and so forth, your vet will determine whether your dog has any worms or other parasites. If so, he’ll be treated to eliminate them. The yearly immunizations your vet will give your dog will protect him from several deadly diseases, including rabies, canine parvo, hepatitis, leptospirosis and distemper. You can also give your Pointer a monthly heartworm preventive to avoid that potentially fatal condition. And don’t overlook the regular teeth cleanings your dog needs. You can do it yourself, but it’s easier and more effective to have your vet take care of it once or twice a year – just like your own dentist visits. Basically, regular vet visits can prevent some health issues and detect others before they become more difficult (if not impossible) to treat successfully.

Feed your Pointer a wholesome diet that’s formulated specifically for dogs. His food should be nutritionally complete and give him all the protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals he needs to live a healthy, happy life. Don’t just feed your Pointer table scraps – they’re not nutritionally complete and they might make him sick.

Your Pointer also needs strenuous exercise every day – a long run is best, although a long walk will do in a pinch. He won’t be happy or healthy without regular exercise.

Finally, groom your Pointer regularly. Fortunately, there isn’t much involved with Pointers – just brush him once or twice a week, and clean his ears and trim his nails once a month or so. You’ll only need to bathe him every few months unless he gets dirty or meets up with a skunk.

It’s not so hard to help your Pointer stay healthy. Simply take him to the vet, feed him a well-balanced diet, exercise him every day and perform some minimal grooming.
