That&#8217;s what happens when you&#8217;ve owned and shown dogs for as long as I have.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I&#8217;ve seen a lot of dogs get sick over the years. I guess a certain amount of that is inevitable, but sometimes it could have been prevented. Take my friend whose dog almost died because of heartworms as a good example. He didn&#8217;t think giving his dog a heartworm preventive was necessary.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Well, as I said, his dog almost died. And the whole sorry experience would have been so easy (and cheap) to prevent. Monthly heartworm preventives are effective and dogs love them &#8211; they think they&#8217;re just a delicious treat.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a monthly heartworm preventive, every Pointer needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An annual exam by a vet, including a fecal exam<\/li>\n<li> A rabies injection (either one-year or three-year, as appropriate)<\/li>\n<li> A DHLPP injection (either one-year or three-year, as appropriate) which protects your Pointer against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza<\/li>\n<li> An annual or biannual bordatella (kennel cough) vaccine<\/li>\n<li> and Plenty of love, affection and exercise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Giving your Pointer all five of these things can help him live to a ripe old age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been around dogs &#8211; including Pointers &#8211; for so many years now I feel like I&#8217;ve seen just about everything.
